Phison Electronics Corp., a worldwide leader in NAND controller and storage solutions, announces the shipment of 3D 64-Layer 4-bit per cell QLC NAND SATA solutions with its PS3111-S11T controller. “A QLC die doubles the density of the TLC. The successful launch of QLC-based products would mean a lot to the memory industry,” said KS Pua, Chairman and CEO of Phison, “SSDs are becoming more affordable with larger capacities than ever.”

　　Mr. Pua notes that the release of the next generation 3D 64-Layer QLC NAND Flash has been pulled-in by about a quarter.  This has taken the industry by surprise and we have to thank the NAND manufacturers’ technology advancements for that. With this trend, the market penetration of SSDs are expected to accelerate. Phison is proactively taking the lead in enabling the QLC for a series of controllers, starting with the PS3111-S11T + QLC SATA SSD solution.

     The new 3D 64-Layer QLC NAND has a mono die density of 128GB. Powered by the PS3111-S11T controller, the SSD solution has capacities of 256GB~1TB. Phison’s 4^th generation SmartECC™ engine exceeds the standard QLC controller requirements and provides outstanding performance for client SSDs.

Phison Electronics (8299.TW), the industry leader in NAND Flash controller and solutions, has released a diversified SSD controller portfolio in 2018. As 3D NAND production increases in 2018 and the cost hitting the sweet spot, the number of SSD projects surges, surpassing previous expectations. Phison has confirmed over 35 designs for the SATA PS3111-S11 and PCIe PS5008-E8/E8T controllers. The new powerful PCIe PS5012-E12 is receiving an overwhelming response from the market with more than 20 projects kicking-off in a single month. With a total of over 100 SSD controller project secured, Phison as a top 3rd party SSD controller IC manufacturer, is expecting an increase in product shipments and an increase in market share.

CS Ma, Chief Technology Officer, commented that the success of PS5012-E12 is the result of the company’s long-term technology investment and advancement. Many 3rd party competitive analysis reports show that Phison’s flagship PS5012-E12 is a best-in-class PCIe Gen3x4 NVMe SSD controller. In addition to achieving the PCI-SIG compliance certification, Phison released an enterprise optimized, PS5012-E12DC, to serve cloud, edge computing, block chain storage, and other high-end applications, driving a wide range of project designs and penetrating the new markets.

Phison’s flagship PCIe SSD controller, PS5012, utilizes a TSMC 28nm process. It maximizes the PCIe Gen 3x4 interface for read and write speeds of up to 3,450MB/s and 3,150MB/s respectively. It can reach device capacity of up to 8TB. The PS5012-E12 based drives are capable of 600K in 4K random read/write performances (IOPS), nearly doubling competitor’s results. PS5012-E12’s top-of-the-line performance will meet the requirements of various high-end applications where the storage speed becomes critical, such as artificial intelligence, mobile gaming computing, and enterprise data center applications. The PS5012 also supports ThunderboltTM3 external SSD designs, caching the Windows-based systems with impressive burst speed and improved user experience.

Phison plans its portfolio carefully, horizontally across different interfaces and vertically over the latest NAND technologies. Phison’s utmost priority is to provide effective and reliable firmware solutions for the current mainstream TLC NAND and the next generations QLC NAND. The proprietary SmartTMECC is specifically designed for 3D TLC and QLC NAND of 96-layers or more. As the SmartTMECC advances into the 4th generation, this low-power LDPC ECC will ultimately become the best solution for the next generation QLC. The technology will enable a storage system that has a perfect balance between memory capacity, read/write latency, and product reliability.
