Phison Press Release 2010/10/25
Kingston Technology Corporation and Phison Electronics Corp. plan to jointly invest in a new company focusing on embedded memory system product development, promotion and total solution services.
NAND Flash memory has traditionally been commonplace in consumer electronic products such as USB Flash drives, memory cards and MP3 players. This trend continued as NAND also became the standard storage solution in smartphones and other portable devices. Recently, there has been a move toward embedded memory which consists of NAND Flash and a controller, thereby easing the design-in effort for handheld makers and expediting the overall product development cycle.
Kingston is the largest independent memory module provider worldwide and is a significant participant in the NAND Flash memory application industry. As such Kingston has an outstanding brand image as well as a complete distribution channel and significant purchasing power. The new joint venture will take advantage of these capabilities.
Phison is the leading NAND Flash controller provider with excellent strategic alliances with the major players in the industry. Phison’s high level of controller R&D expertise will provide the new company a wide, competitive range of products with the best technical back-end support.
Kingston and Phison have enjoyed a long working relationship. Kingston is a 6.45 percent shareholder of Phison. Given the future trends in the NAND Flash market, both companies look forward to this new joint venture. The two companies combine expertise in engineering, production, sales and procurement. Together, this joint venture will lead to a healthy slice of the market for upcoming NAND Flash embedded applications.
The joint venture with Kingston will not affect any relationships with Phison’s existing partners, vendors and customers. As a total solution provider, Phison strives to develop the best controllers and systems products, hoping to accelerate the quick adoption of NAND Flash memory across the industry.

Giesecke & Devrient and Phison Set Up Joint Venture |
Munich, Taipei, October 1, 2009 – Giesecke & Devrient (G&D) and Phison, the Taiwanese global market leader in flash and USB controller technology, are joining forces to develop and market secure flash products. Their joint venture – Giesecke & Devrient Secure Flash Solutions GmbH – will be headquartered in Munich (Germany) and will have a second office in Taipei (Taiwan). It will develop and market hardware-based security solutions for mobile end devices, for example in the form of microSD cards and USB tokens. G&D will hold a 70 percent majority stake in the joint venture. |
Mobile end devices for communications and multi-media applications such as notebooks, cell phones, mobile TV equipment and games consoles have become an integral part of everyday life. These applications make it necessary to protect the digital identity of the user. At the same time, mobile transactions made using the equipment and data stored on it also need to be protected against unauthorized access. And that is exactly what the joint venture’s products will do. Giesecke & Devrient Secure Flash Solutions will offer security solutions that are specifically designed for the encryption of e-mails or cell phone conversations, or applications such as mobile pay-TV.
Dr. Kai Grassie, head of the New Business division at G&D, says: “The joint venture marries G&D’s expertise in security solutions with Phison’s expertise in flash and USB controllers. Secure microSD cards and secure USB tokens generate secure applications which will help us conquer new markets.”
Mr. KS Pua, the Chairman of Phison, comments: “For years we’ve had very good access to the mass market for flash storage products. This joint venture is a strategic decision. Combining forces with Giesecke & Devrient puts us in a position to meet our clients’ increased demands for security when it comes to storage solutions.”
Already a market success, the Mobile Security Card developed by G&D using flash controller technology from Phison is a good example of such solutions. In future, the Mobile Security Card will be further developed by Giesecke & Devrient Secure Flash Solutions and marketed by the joint venture. New generations of the Mobile Security Card (e.g. for contactless applications) and other secure flash products are already in the pipeline.
Potential clients include manufacturers and other providers who are interested in integrating secure applications into mobile end devices. These may be PC and mobile equipment manufacturers, system integrators, retailers and/or providers of access systems for mobile TV applications.

Phison Announces Enhanced Storage Flash Drive Controllers for Windows 7
Phison Electronics Corp., the global leader in USB flash drive controllers, today introduced its Enhanced Storage solution for Windows 7. The Enhanced Storage controllers PS2251-33 and PS2251-50 provide flash drive password protection as a built-in feature in Windows 7, putting security at a user’s fingertips.
Enhanced Storage, initially presented by Microsoft at WinHEC 2008, is a standardized way of password protecting USB devices in Windows, and must be implemented by USB controller hardware. The PS2251-33 and PS2251-50 from Phison are the first flash controllers to support this new feature, which utilizes the IEEE 1667 Password Silo security specification as the device communication protocol. The controllers have been qualified by WHQL (Windows Hardware Quality Labs) and provide seamless integration between Windows 7 and USB flash drives.
“Currently there is limited USB flash drive security standard for the consumers. With various kinds of hardware and software out there, drive manufacturers may find these add-ons difficult to promote and manage,” said KS Pua, CEO, Phison Electronics Corporation. “By working with Microsoft and integrating the IEEE 1667 technology, our Enhanced Storage solution lays out a common security protocol with extensibility, yet offers a simple password protection feature enriching the Windows 7 user experience. We look forward to receiving positive feedback from customers.”
“The need for a standard password implementation for consumer storage devices has been an issue in the marketplace for some time,” said John Loveall, Director of Program Management at Microsoft. “The Enhanced Storage architecture in Windows 7 provides an out-of-the-box solution for password protection of USB storage devices. Microsoft is very excited about Phison’s announcement of hardware support of Enhanced Storage. With Windows 7, this will provide an integrated device solution to the consumer.”
Enhanced Storage is as simple as it gets. In Windows 7, a user can set the password on his new drive and also choose own recovery password and a reminder hint. When locked, the drive cannot be seen and accessed. The drive will also be locked automatically if the PC shuts down, goes into standby mode, or is unplugged from the PC. Moreover, an Enhanced Storage device has a factory-set limit that resets the drive after a number of consecutive failed log-in attempts. This technology eliminates possible brute force attacks.
The Phison PS2251-33 and PS2251-50 controllers are already available to USB drive manufacturers in preparation for the launch of Windows 7. PS2251-33 is a high-performance controller capable of over 20MB/s write speed on MLC flash.. PS2251-50 is an entry-level controller that does not require an oscillator on the drive, targeted to save system cost for manufacturers.
