Phison and Kingston Collaborate on NVMe SSD Controller to Accelerate into the Next SSD-era
Hsinchu, Taiwan - December 6, 2017 – Phison Electronics (8299.TW), a leading provider of NAND flash solutions including removable flash, managed NAND, and SSD products, today announced combined SSD controller shipments to Kingston Technology (“Kingston”) exceeding 18 million units. This achievement shows Phison’s strong commitment to R&D investment in collaboration with Kingston to build a wide portfolio of SSD products. Since 2012, Phison has delivered more than 10 SSD controller solutions to Kingston®consisting of PATA, SATA, and PCIe. The latest duo of PCIe 3.0 NVMe controllers, E7 and E8, will continue to drive the next wave of SSD evolution for Kingston’s SSD line as the massive transition from SATA to PCIe interface continues in 2018.

Phison and Kingston also share common interests in developing and marketing enterprise-level storage. Phison’s S10 controller powers Kingston’s DC400 SSDs, featuring flexible over-provisioning and consistent performance. In 2015, Phison and Kingston co-invested in Liqid Inc, an enterprise start-up specializing in enterprise storage and composable infrastructure for the enterprise market. In 2016, Kingston debuted the DCP1000, the company’s flagship high-performance enterprise SSD, equipped with Liqid’s proprietary RAID technology and Phison’s E7 controller. At its launch, the DCP1000 boasted best-in-class read and write performance of 6800 MB/s and 1.25 million IOPS, making it the world’s fastest NVMe add-in-card SSD.

Phison’s New PS8313 UFS Controller Brings to Mobile the High Performance CoXProcessor 2.0 Technology from Its PCIe SSD
Phison Electronics Corp., a world-leading NAND controller IC provider and member of UFSA Board of Directors, announces the PS8313 UFS 2.1 controller at the Flash Memory Summit. PS8313 is a top-performing 2-lane chip targeting Tier-1 flagship mobile chipsets and smartphones. Taking advantage of the latest generation of 3D TLCs, the state-of-the-art solution addresses the increasing capacity and cost per density requirements from the fast-changing mobile market.
UFS, or Universal Flash Storage, is the high-speed interface standard aimed to replace eMMC in mobile phones and SD cards in memory card applications. The latest UFS 2.1specification is equipped with increasing data rates and a differential-signaling serial interface with full-duplex operation. Currently, the best mobile application processors are gearing up the 2-lane UFS interface support at 1200MB/s, 3 times the speed over its predecessor eMMC, and PS8313 will be a leading independent UFS controller to meet the impressive throughput requirement. The powerful PS8313’s sequential and random read/write speeds on 3D NAND are topping 920/550MB/s and 67K/62K IOPS, which are comparable to SATA SSDs, bringing an unparalleled new experience to the ultimate smartphone users for gaming, high-resolution video and streaming applications.
PS8313 utilizes an advanced 28nm process while Phison’s innovative in-house M-PHY, UniPro and UFS IPs gives a total control over the solution for scalability. Equipped with an ultra-compact and low-power LDPC ECC engine designed for the latest 3D TLC, the controller effectively enhances memory endurance and reliability. The efficient design also removes the need for additional passive components in the UFS package, simplifying the BOM for the device manufacturers. Supporting a maximum of 8 NAND dice, PS8313 can enable up to 256GB of NAND storage into several form factors such as the UFS Card, discrete BGA, or UFS-based multichip packages with low-power DRAM (uMCPs) for different mobile applications.

Phison Gears Up for Mobile Phone Market with PS8226 3D NAND eMMC 5.1 Controller
Phison Electronics (TPEX:8299), a leading NAND flash controller solution provider, today announced its latest PS8226 eMMC controller at 2017 Computex Taipei. This eMMC 5.1 compliant controller aims to support the vast 3D TLC technology from multiple NAND memory companies.
The second half of 2017 will see a strong demand for mobile devices. Driven by the increasing performance and capacity requirements from high-resolution video and streaming applications, various smartphone manufacturers plan on introducing an array of new products in the next quarters, and the eMMC and eMCP storage devices are in high demand. Phison is optimistic that the new PS8226 with 3D NAND solutions will capture a significant share in the mobile storage market.
The expansion of the mobile market saw Phison’s eMMC/eMCP controller solutions benefiting from Tier-1 smartphone brands design-wins through strategic NAND and module partners. PS8226 is set to continue this trend. Currently, the 2D to 3D NAND transition is aggressively driven by all memory manufacturers, and the PS8226 will contribute as the first independent eMMC controller taking advantage of 3D TLC’s high density and performance. The strong momentum of PS8226 solutions will also pave the way for the next generation UFS (Universal Flash Storage) adopting 3D TLC NAND.
In order to deliver the best endurance out of the emerging 3D NAND, PS8226 is equipped with Phison’s proprietary StrongECC™ correction engine. Utilizing an optimized power domain management scheme and innovative hardware architecture, the power consumption of PS8226 has reduced by 50% while the random performances have doubled compared to the 2D NAND eMMC solutions. The efficient design of the PS8226 effectively removes the need for additional passive components in the eMMC package, enabling significant overall BOM savings. These advantages of PS8226 will help customers accomplish high performance, robust, power-efficient and cost-competitive 3D eMMC/eMCP mobile solutions.

Next Generation 3D NAND Propels PCIe SSD Adoption

The next generation 3D NAND directly provides major benefits for PCIe storage solutions. Both Phison’s PS5008-E8 and PS5008-E8T controllers now provide a mainstream, high-performance solution in a small package from M.2 2280 to BGA SSD.
